Dentures

Dentures are a type of removable appliance used to replace missing teeth, often fabricated using an acrylic material and occasionally combined with some metals. The two main types of dentures are explained below.

Complete dentures:

Complete or full dentures replace all of the teeth on either the upper or lower jaw. Complete dentures are made from prefabricated acrylic and sized to fit the shape of your jaw and mouth. They mimic the colour and appearance of your natural teeth, and function in the missing areas to allow you to chew. The unique impression of your teeth, your bite, and the shape of your jaw will be used to create the dentures. The team at Proactive Dental work with local Australian labs and technicians to fabricate high quality prostheses that can last many years if given the appropriate care and maintenance.

Over time your mouth will change, and you may find that as the jaw bones and gum shrink or recede, your dentures may not fit as well as they used to. You can have your dentures refitted or remade with us when necessary.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are removable devices that replace a few missing teeth, instead of all the teeth in the jaw line. They can be made in acrylic or chrome cobalt, both materials having their own advantages and disadvantages. Partial dentures are held in place in the mouth by metal clasps or precision attachments. Precision attachments require crowns to be put on the remaining anchor teeth holding the denture in place. Regardless, these supporting teeth must be in good health and a thorough examination by our dentists is required.

Immediate dentures

As the name suggests, immediate dentures allow the immediately insertion of the denture following tooth removal, without the need to leave the dental clinic with gaps or missing teeth. As we rely heavily on our teeth for everyday function, speech, and appearance, having an immediate denture made may be a preferrable option.

To ensure a well-fitting and comfortable prostheses and good long-term result, our skilled dentists may also require additional information on your dentition, obtained through occlusal analysis, shade assessment, and analysis of study models.

Occlusal Analysis

  • Identify habits such as teeth clenching or grinding
  • Document the alignment of your teeth and assessing bite forces
  • Protecting the longevity of your teeth and restorations

Shade Assessment

Assesing the shade of your teeth
Assessing the potential benefits of teeth whitening
Identifying shade guides for any restorative work, such as veneers, crowns or composite restorations

Upper and lower study models (if required)
*providing a diagnostic record of your existing teeth and bite
*monitoring wear and helping to plan and present your treatment
*helping to monitor and preserve your teeth and bite for long-term
*providing a reconstructive guide in case of an accident
